Canal Point is a designated census site in Palm Beach County, Florida, USA. Canal Point is situated on Lake Okeechobee’s eastern shore, north-east of Pahokee and north-west of Bryant. Up to almost 400 years ago, the unincorporated community was originally populated by the Calusa people. In the 1900s, Whites began to occupy the area, forming an agrarian community. The completion of the West Palm Beach Canal in 1917 allowed the shipping of crops by boat to West Palm Beach and then to other parts of the world, while the construction of Conners Highway in 1924 resulted in the transport of crops by motor vehicle. The community today continues to rely heavily on agriculture, especially sugar. The town has very little infrastructure and is very small. Canal Point has a small population, accounting for 367 individuals in the 2010 census, down from 525 in the 2000 census data.

Approximately 10 miles (16 km) from Canal Point, archeological evidence from Big Mound City suggests that the Calusa tribe inhabited the area between about 500 BCE and 1650 CE. Canal Point was the first White settlement on Lake Okeechobee’s eastern shore, in 1909. In 1917 the Land and Timber Company of Southern States began planting sugarcane in the area. The West Palm Beach Canal was finished around that same time. The canal linked Lake Okeechobee to West Palm Beach at Canal Level, allowing farms to sell crops via the Florida East Coast Railway to West Palm Beach or elsewhere in the United States. Transport of crops by motor vehicle from the location to other destinations started in 1924 when Conners Highway was completed, mainly following the West Palm Beach Canal route.

Canal Point was largely unscathed by the 1928 storm, unlike other areas along the southeastern and eastern coasts of Lake Okeechobee. The community was probably flooded with water of 1.5 to 2.5 ft (0.46 to 0.76 m), and one death occurred. However, after the building of the Herbert Hoover Dike reduced boat traffic in the 1930s, the local economy suffered greatly and never recovered. Residents preserved the historic Canal Point School from demolition and planned to turn it into an agricultural museum but in 2008 a fire destroyed the school. Hurricane Wilma destroyed numerous other historic buildings inside the city only three years ago.
